Essentially, sand is a “marriage” of just two of our planet’s most common elements: silicon and oxygen.
Nonetheless, sand offers an astonishing amount of visual diversity.
In some parts of the world, if you look down from an aircraft – ideally, one flying relatively “low”, but high enough to render small plants “invisible” – you could be fooled into believing that everything within your field of view was 100% sand.
The desert from which Namibia takes its name is generally reckoned the world’s oldest.
The Namib is very definitely not 100% sand, but its “sand sea” section does offer excellent opportunities to experience the aforementioned illusion.
I took this post’s photo at 5.23 pm on 20 November 2022; eventually, that day’s late afternoon flight over the Namib will have its own Pelican Yoga sequence.
Namibia will not be permitted to hog this particular series!
Sand is the star of the series’ every post, but this first chapter’s photo will remain the only one in which sand is allowed to occupy the entire frame.
