However, most (of the relatively few, still) people who have reached the pictured lake do find it decidedly “unearthly”
Moving from “landscape view” to “closer view” is highly likely to alter a first-time visitor’s initial impression/estimation of Kati-Thanda-Lake Eyre, but most visitors continue to feel that they are on “another planet”.
I took the photo at Lake Eyre South at 9.30 am on 10 June 2023.
This post’s “landscape” image and the next one’s “much closer view” were both taken with a 400 mm lens.
Footnote:
Moves are now underway to stop people from driving or walking on – or swimming in (rarely possible, but a very stupid/dangerous idea) Lake Eyre-proper – the actual (occasionally flooded) salt pan.
The proposed ban would have zero impact on the behaviour of most visitors to Kati Thanda -Lake Eyre. They would still be welcomed by its traditional “owners”, other “authorities” and responsible tourism businesses.
Most visitors already understand that they should stay on the lake’s shorelines and banks – for their own safety and to preserve the integrity of the lake-proper.
The few idiots who have gone out into the vast salt pan have already done a lot of damage to the lake..and in some cases, to their stupid selves and to their “whoops, it doesn’t actually go everywhere!” bogged, rapidly-corroding vehicles.
Details are here.
