Namib Desert’s northwest (#17 in series: taking the river road)

For quite some time, in the distant past, the Hoarusib River must have carried a lot more water, a lot more often, and had much more erosive power.

Now, most of the time, the pictured section of the river provides a non-challenging “road” for 4WD vehicles.

Here, not very many kilometres in from the Atlantic, the Hoarusib has cut a spectacular gorge, through volcanic rock.

I think (underline think) that the sides of the gorge are mostly comprised of dolerite, basalt and granite.
