Residents of Old Delhi can do much – for some residents, I suspect, all – of their daily shopping without ever having to walk through a shop door.
A great deal of buying and selling is conducted on streets and footpaths, with no “showroom”, no elaborate “displays”, and no physical barriers between a customer’s hands and the goods on offer.
Testing/tasting the wares is easily accomplished.
In addition to the pictured bananas, dates and cheap clothes, on the streets of Old Delhi there are colossal quantities of vegetables, fruits, grains, pulses, flours, spices, tonnes more cheap clothing, a smaller quantity of not-so-cheap attire, and every imaginable kind of phone accessory.
And if you are looking for someone who can repair just about anything, he or she can be found in Old Delhi, albeit probably within a shop that has walls and a door.
