The pictured art object sits outside the front door of The Prairie Hotel, which is surely Australia’s most wonderfully-unlikely – and downright wonderful – outback pub
Be sure to read the “artist’s statement”.
The hotel pretty much is the hamlet of Parachilna, which a colourful signboard proclaims THE EDIACARA CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, where fossils rock!
That declaration is no idle boast.
Parachilna sits 489 kilometres north of Adelaide and just east of the northern Flinders Ranges.
The very beautiful Parachilna Gorge is just 8 kilometres away.
Nearby is one of “our” planet’s most significant fossil sites; its recognition/preservation, and the venerable pub’s audacious but respectful revival/reinvention are both in large part due to one couple…of which much more, eventually, on Pelican Yoga.
If you wish to know a little more, meanwhile, click here for a slightly out-of-date but substantially accurate overview of pub, fossils and countryside.
Hi Doug,
You’re right about the Parachilna Hotel although it’s been a long time since I was last there. Not that I’m competing, but we had a different artistic experience and a unique brush with fame. The principal guests at the time were the cast and crew of Rabbit-Proof Fence who were filming on location. Phil Noyce was working too hard to make an appearance, but cinematographer Chris Doyle was a conspicuous presence.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of your photos from the Flinders in days to come. Bob
