Triple K “expedition” (#23 in teaser series: Haldi village)

Haldi village is a “modest” one, in a “remote” valley in northern Pakistan.

Surely one of the world’s most spectaculary-sited settlements, Haldi sits above the Shyok’s vast riverbed…and immediately below the Haldi Cones.

The Karakoram has many considerably higher mountains, but it is not hard to understand why more than a few people regard the Haldi Cones as the most spectacular  – at least among Karakoram peaks which a visitor can see, “up close”, without having to embark on a demanding, high-altitude trek.

By road, Haldi is circa 25 kilometres from Khaplu; as the proverbial crow flies, the distance is much shorter.

If you look at the left-most peaks in the preceding post’s photo – taken from Khaplu – you should be able to recognise that the very same peaks dominate this post’s featured image.

I took #23’s photo at 10.59 am on16 May 2024.

That day delivered a feast of almost-unimaginable scenic splendour,  enjoyable encounters with local people, a tasty (local trout) lunch, and what I am very sure will remain my lifetime’s most memorable, enjoyable and surprising “sporting event”.

A deal of my visual record of all the aforementioned will emerge on Pelican Yoga, but not just yet.

However, this teaser series’ next chapter will give you a taste of the sporting event.
