Members of the kingfisher family are typically very confident; these predatory birds are not much preyed-upon.
Fish are not invariably their primary prey, and not all kingfishers live near rivers or lakes.
Pictured is the most ubiquitous of Asia’s kingfishers, Halcyon smyrnensis – the white-throated kingfisher.
By itself, this perky individual’s demeanour was almost enough to qualify it for inclusion in this series…

However, as is true of just about anything observed more than once, “our” moon offers an infinite number of different “faces”.

Photo was taken a few hundred metres upstream of Epupa Falls.
At 6.37 am on 11 November 2022 I was standing on the Namibian side of the Kunene River.
In Angola it is the Cunene; above, you are looking at both nations…and the moon.
The Kunene and the Orange (which is the border between Namibia and South Africa) are the only two of Namibia’s rivers that “permanently” have water flowing – above ground, visible – all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Today’s song with words is a lovely celebration of daybreak on “the spine of England”.
Its image comes from “the roof of the world”, where even flat, “low” places are several thousand metres higher than England’s Pennine Hills.
