WA is home to at least 10 banded greenhood species.

The genus Pterostylis – known as greenhoods – has 300+ species.

If there is a piece of greenhood-inspired music – let alone a sublime one – I am yet to hear it.

However, another intriguing plant genus did inspire the greatest flatpicking acoustic guitarist to create one of his signature numbers.

Tony Rice’s home state of California is “manzanita central”.

Members of the genus Arctostaphylos are evergreen shrubs, known as manzanitas.

They are named after their nutritious, tasty fruit; manzanita is a Spanish word that translates as “little Apple”.
