Word power: bankers’ role in pandemic

Dark as these times are, light – or lightness, at least – can still be shed.

It can be found even in the pages of a particularly poor, parochial, self-serving daily – one that no longer deserves to be called a “newspaper”.

On Wednesday March 18, 2020 The West Australian published my favourite COVID-19 letter, to date.

Daryl Binning of Winthrop’s letter, in full:

Using contaminated bank notes and coins has been identified as one of the health risks during this current pandemic. Perhaps it’s time to relent and let the banks get on with what they are good at – money laundering.

Meanwhile, in the old city centre of Rajasthan’s largest city, a remarkably compact institute of higher learning is surely doing its bit.

Australia’s distressingly large ranks of toilet-roll-rich idiot-hoarders would – or should – regard it as an impeccable source of guidance!

Well spotted – both the money laundering suggestion and the Rajasthan Institute. I wonder if the Reserve Bank could up the anti and get into dry cleaning?
